With two toddlers running around the house, I'm all for the trend of ditching the candy and filling the Advent calendars with Christmas activities instead. I'm a little scared, however, of actually committing myself to a project or outing each day before I get a chance to see how it's shaking out. After all, I do have a very young toddler who's nap schedule is still a bit of a moving target as well as an older toddler who inspired the recent "How to Maintain Your Zen When the Kids Have Lost … [Read more...]
It’s Almost December, Do You Have an Advent Calendar Yet?
December seems to sneak up on me every year, which wouldn't be too worrisome except it means that I never seem to have my advent calendar ready in time. Actually, to be fair, last year was the first year we decide to do an advent calendar. But I was late then and I can already sense a pattern forming. The solution to this problem is a simple one - man up and either buy or make a calendar substantial enough to be used year after year (sadly last year's version just doesn't fit the bill). Then … [Read more...]
Veteran’s Day
Looking for a simple way to commemorate Veteran's Day with the kids? I love this flag project from For the Love of Art. It's an easy open-ended project that reminds me of something the Novogratz crew would hang loud and proud on a wall. And if you really want to go the extra mile, check out Operation Miles - a wonderful collaboration between The Frequent Flyer Father and Fisher House. Together they are encouraging and collecting Airline Miles for: Service members … [Read more...]
Christmas Gift Idea: Make a Dress Up Kit with Halloween Clearance Items
When I polled you guys a few weeks ago on what you'd like to see more of here, one of the most popular answers was kid gift ideas. Striking while all the Halloween stuff is on … [Read more...]
Halloween Traditions & What to do with All that Candy
Happy Halloween everyone! We've been talking about it for so long I'm sort of wondering what to do with myself tomorrow. For one more look at all of MPMK's Handmade Halloween posts, see here. I've also been wondering what to do with all the candy once Halloween's over. Last year C was young enough that I just had to hide it and he forgot about it. This year I know it's not going to work that way. Luckily, I've been reading up on some of my favorite blogger's Halloween … [Read more...]
Handmade Halloween: Ghost Jell-O Treats
If you've been paying close attention, then you probably already know where I derived the inspiration for these ghostly goodies. Remember these cloud parfaits? As soon as I saw them I knew I wanted to put my own spin on them and try to make Halloween ghosts. The problem was the photo, like too many Pinterest finds, was a dead end (looks like it was originally pinned from a password protected site). The description on the pin said something along the lines of "Jell-O + whipped cream" … [Read more...]
We Tried It! – Cookie Cutter Pumpkins
I'm back with another installment of the "We Tried It!" series. I got the idea for cookie cutter pumpkin carving here and it was a huge hit with the kiddos. I love how this method lets you easily create a high end look in whatever theme your kids are currently interested in. We went with a pretty random motif of animals, an airplane, and a guitar. Next year maybe we'll experiment with letters. To begin, carve out the pumpkin guts and select a few of your favorite cookie … [Read more...]
