Ah, fall - I adore this time of year, especially now that I have kids. There's so much potential for fun: fun crafts, fun outings, fun food - fun, fun, fun! The only thing I don't love about the season is the slightly panicked feeling I get about getting myself organized enough to cram it all in. That's why I'm so excited my friend, and kid art aficionado, Jean wrote The Artful Year: Autumn. It's loaded with just the kind of activities and recipes I want to share with the kids this year, … [Read more...]
Top-Notch Halloween Stories
I love seasonal and holiday books, although I've discovered that you generally have to sort through a lot of poorly-written or cheesily-illustrated reads to find the gems. These are six that I consider very well-done against any scale, not just for Halloween. Earlier this week Steph suggested reading stories at night by candlelight as part of MPMK's 31 Ways to Start a Halloween Tradition. All of these picks would be excellent choices for doing so. … [Read more...]
DIY Autumn Arrangements
Is it cooling down where you live yet? Fall is definitely in the air here and with the crisp weather, comes a desire to fully immerse myself in Autumn. Despite my penchant for DIY projects, I've never been much of a floral arrangement kind of girl (I actually just got my first wreath last Christmas). However, the web has been teeming with bold and beautiful autumn foliage lately. So much so that I'm inspired to try out a DIY arrangement at home. In no particluar order, here are my top six … [Read more...]
Handmade Halloween: Etsy Costume Roundup
I know it's a little early for Halloween, but when talking costumes it never hurts to get ahead of the crowd. I absolutely love the look of handmade Halloween costumes over store-bought. But that doesn't mean I have the time, or for that matter the talent, to actually make them. In the next few years I'm really going to try to work on my sewing skills (and on recognizing that it's about the effort and not a perfect product). Hopefully I'll be ready to whip something up by the time my kids … [Read more...]
4th of July Finds for Everyone
The 4th of July is just around the corner, have you made your plans yet? The holiday is said to mark the unofficial start of summer here in Seattle (as in the sun is actually supposed to start making a regular appearance afterwards) so I'm more than a bit excited. To celebrate I've rounded up two collections of treats: an adult version, which in my world means some cool summer spirits, and a kid collection. Hope you enjoy! … [Read more...]
Father’s Day
Raise your hand if you don't exactly have Father's day all shored up yet. Uh huh, that's what I thought. Never fear, while on my death bed I've been scouring the web for some truly rad DIYs for Dad (oh God, the Nyquil's making me rhyme now). Anyway, check 'em out - I'm sure you'll approve. 1) For the Dapper Dan dad, hand stamped handkerchiefs. 2) For the "Let the good times roll" dad, a beer tasting sample pack (complete with custom photo labels) 3) For the sentimental dad … [Read more...]

Creative Play Easter Basket Idea: Water Bead Eggs
Aren't these water bead eggs cool? They were unbelievably easy and inexpensive to pull together and I think the kids are going to get such a kick out of opening them up and playing with the contents on Easter. UPDATE: check out how my kiddos played with these after cracking them open here. If you're not familiar with water beads, they come in little plastic packets that fit in the palm of your hand. Each "bead" is a teeny tiny ball which, when soaked in water … [Read more...]
Easter Projects Circa 2011
I can't believe it's time to start talking about Easter again! This was a huge holiday for me last year - in fact I still run into lots of people around the web that know MPMK based solely on the DIY paint chip Easter garland above. I've got some fresh ideas lined up for 2012 but before I delve into all that I thought it would be fun to remind of you of the good stuff still hanging around from last year. Along with DIY decor, I also tackled some DIY Easter baskets. My … [Read more...]
