Have you ever had a day you weren't really looking forward to, for one reason or another, but actually turned out to be really great? That's exactly what happened to me a few Fridays ago. We had C's dental appointment and I decided to bring S along so she could get the feel of the place for when her turn arrives. The idea of trying to keep her still while making sure he was relaxed was already worrying me a bit that morning. To add to what could have been an awful series events, upon … [Read more...]
A No-Mess Painting Technique
I'm at momtastic this week sharing my favorite new painting technique. S and I picked it up at toddler group and it was a big hit. Don't get me wrong, I'm still all for getting messy but it's nice to have some tamer creative activities to draw from. When I was plotting this project in my head I envisioned using paper cut into egg shapes to make some pretty Easter decor. When it actually came down to it, everything was so spur of the moment that I couldn't harness C's excitement long … [Read more...]
Good Idea: Bring the Garden Inside
I'm so over winter. Seriously, I feel like we've done the cold and snow thing enough already - I'm jonesing to get outside with the kids and start growing stuff. Judging by the hail that's currently pelting my backyard (and the snow that fell yesterday), Mother Nature does not share my sentiments. On to plan B then. If we can't cultivate anything outside just yet (or at least attempt to cultivate - I've been cursed with a bit of a black thumb I'm afraid), then we'll do it in the kitchen … [Read more...]
We Tried It! Making Tracks with Tape
We were stuck inside the other day in an attempt to keep a case of the sniffles from becoming something uglier. As the morning began to drag on (and I realized it was still only 9:00 am), I decided it was time to finally break out the painters tape and make some of those crazy cool DIY tracks I keep spotting on pinterest. Since we only had extra wide tape, I tore it in half vertically to make wonky strips and C helped me piece them together. The examples … [Read more...]
Homemade Toys Part III
This time of year can be so tough if you have little ones in the house. Snowy weather combined with cold and flu season often means lots of days stuck inside. Around our house that's a recipe for something I like to call restless kid syndrome - which often results in general crankiness and an increase in meltdowns. So what's the antidote to this ailment? Getting creative of course. To help you out, I've finally gotten my act together and updated the make and play vault. I've … [Read more...]
Rainy (or Snowy) Day Projects for Bigger Kids
I know I typically focus on the younger set around here but, with Christmas Break looming, I figured you could use some ideas for the older siblings too. What follows is a list of activities to thrill and entice kids ranging from first grade and up (although many will probably entertain your toddler as well). Enjoy! 1. Every kid loves a magic trick, especially when they get to be the magician. Set them up with this tutorial, plus a few supplies, and let them amaze you. 2. … [Read more...]
Elsewhere: A New Art Technique to Try
I'm guest posting at Whip Up today with one of my favorite new art techniques: block printing with yarn. This one is truly appropriate for all ages. Our first go at it was a fascinating experience for C (he couldn't believe he was actually allowed to paint on a few of his blocks) and a successful attempt at DIY modern art for me. Head over to Whip Up for the full tutorial. P.S. Looking to simplify in 2013? Bonus: Use the code JANUARY for 10% off the PDF file through the end of … [Read more...]
Hello, Autumn!
Thanks so much to you all for another lovely week. There's been so much going on, I'm not sure where to start. How about with these amazing candy apples? The shine on them is nothing less than perfection. For the tutorial on those, as well as 5 more quintessential fall crafts (actually, 105 more to be precise), checkout my momtastic post from yesterday. Have a great weekend everyone! … [Read more...]
Jazzing Up Your Photos with Sidewalk Chalk
We're FINALLY having professional family photos taken next weekend and I'm so excited! (There is a small chance it might not happen due to C developing a very persistent stye in his eye - of course - but I'm sticking my head firmly into the sand and moving forward with haircuts, outfit selection, and the like as if everything will go off without a hitch.) I found this wonderful photographer through a question/comment she left right here at MPMK. As shoot time approaches, we've been … [Read more...]
