Happy Family Habit #4: Staying Young (and Silly!) with Your Kids

May 30 by Kristin

It’s been another 21 days so Kristin is back again with a new Happy Family Habit. (By the way – how did you all do with daily unplugging? I found it hard but immensely helpful!)  This time it’s all about having a little more fun…

QUESTION OF THE DAY

How do you stay young and have fun with your children?  Do you find yourself being the serious parent?

Some people are born silly.  They don’t take themselves too seriously because they feel comfortable in their own skin.  I am NOT one of those people.  I take myself seriously.  I am a rule follower and I think about consequences. OFTEN.

So, in raising kids, my husband is often the fun parent and I tend to be the one holding the fort down.  Many of you moms will side with me.  Someone has to keep this ship afloat.

Over the past few years I’ve learned that there’s a time let go of the rules and what ‘should be done.’  There’s a time when the goal of having FUN is more important than anything else.  And being the organized mom that I am, I have a few tips on how to have fun.

be-silly-1

1.  Hang out in places that you normally wouldn’t be.  This is where the fun is!  If you can always be found in the kitchen making meals or in the laundry room folding clothes, take a break and hang out in the kids’ rooms or outside on the grass.  It all starts with being present.

2.  Say yes to impractical things every once in awhile.  You’re the one that thinks about budgets and ‘good buys.’  But, kids don’t think that way.  So, throw good reason out the window from time to time.  Buy those fake moustaches just for fun!  I think the Target check-out aisle was made for those ‘just for fun’ purchases.

3.  Let the kids be in charge.  Kids are used to being under your direction.  Give them your cookbooks and take suggestions for dinner or dessert.  Or let your daughter give you a make-over.  These unexpected moments put them in the driver’s seat and lead to lots of fun memories.

4.  Moments of  general goofiness.  There are times when you just channel your inner 9 year old and have a great time.  This is my father-in-law and I hamming it up for the kids.  Of course, these aren’t every day occurences, but they are good for the soul.

I hope you’ll break out of your shell like I have.  If you really want a good laugh, check out my Halloween costume from last year.  Talk about being silly!!
