{Memory Keeping} Chalkboard Photo Frame DIY

July 28 by Kristin

Love the modern look of this DIY chalkboard frame. Would be fun for kids to make or as a hostess gift too!

Have you guys checked out our new Photography & Memory Keeping category yet?

The plan is to fill it to the brim with usable ideas for busy parents on how to take great photos, how to organize them, and what to do with them once you actually print them! It’s one of the things I’m most excited about this year – can you tell?

Here’s Kristin with a quick and easy photo project that will make a big visual impact in a special nook or cranny in your home.

We already know the importance of taking photos, making sure we are in the photos and how to organize our photos, but let’s talk about upping our photo game with a little DIY.  Once you’ve printed your photos, think beyond framing and get out your craft supplies.

I love photos as gifts or as home decor.  Maybe it’s the fact that I’m a professional photographer or maybe it’s that I know walking by a hand-crafted photo just puts a smile on my face.

Today we’re going to take a photo print (mine is black and white, but color looks great too) and make a chalkboard-inspired frame.

I love the chalkboard trend, but today we’re not going to use chalk.  And trust me, it’s a lot easier!

Start with a small piece of wood (purchased a craft store), black chalkboard paint and a white sharpie (also sold at an office supply store).

Paint your piece of wood with the black chalkboard paint.  It took me about 3 coats to achieve a solid black and I let it dry completely between each coat.

Use your adhesive of choice (I chose a glue stick, but hot glue and double-sided tape would also work) to adhere your photo (you can cut it down if you need to) to the wood.  You may want to center it or leave all the space at the top or bottom for text.  Get creative!

With a white sharpie, decorate your chalkboard with text and flourishes.  A white sharpie is permanent, but the writing is so much smoother than a piece of white chalk.

Some pieces of wood are sold with a back to stand alone.  You can also prop against a shelf or attach magnets to the back.

The photo I chose was taken in Israel while getting ready to ride camels with my husband.  It was our first big trip and I hope the beginning of many more.  I love that this little piece of art can add to my collection of photos in a thoughtful and beautiful way.
