Scavenger hunts and reading make the perfect pair. Discovering new stories, interesting characters, or a great series builds your child’s love for literature as well as her motivation to become an independent reader.
As parents we want to grow our children’s interest in reading but sometimes feel like we’ve run out of ideas on how to do just that.
To help, we’ve created a fun and simple way to challenge your child to read and discover outside of their comfort zone.
It’s a free printable scavenger hunt that’s sure to pique your child’s curiosity and love for reading!

My 9-year old is a huge fan of Harry Potter, and she finished off the 7 book series in a matter of weeks. Now she’s had a hard time finding other stories that she can jump into with as much excitement as she experienced with the J.K. Rawling’s stories.
I put her up the Reading Scavenger Hunt challenge, and it’s been a delight to see her try new reads that would not have gotten a second look before.
In total there are 25 book challenges on the map, and they can be applied to emergent readers as well as more advanced readers (even adults). Try out some of our stops:
- Read a book that a friend recommends…
- Try reading a story with only pictures…
- Read a story in your sleeping bag…
- Sit down with a story your mom or dad loved as a child…
- Read a book with a main character about your age…
Start at any point on the map to mark off all your reading. We have our map posted on the bulletin board, and my daughter crosses off the various boxes as she reads another one of the twenty-five books.
She’s already branched out into non-fiction titles that she would not have discovered otherwise. She’s also learned where she loves to read (some of the challenges ask you to read at the library or outside under the stars) and had great conversations with her friends and family about what she likes and dislikes from these books to better form her choices for future discoveries.
