It's one of my favorite days of the month - the day when resident MPMK librarian Janssen once again stops by and shares a new list of her favorite picks with us. Did you guys have book orders at school growing up? I used to get so excited when a new one would arrive. This kind of feels like that - Janssen always makes such amazing recommendations, I can never wait to devour her latest list. Hope you guys enjoy as much as I do. P.S. QUESTION OF THE DAY What's the one parenting book (or book … [Read more...]
LOVE-ly Valentine Reads for Kids
Have you guys noticed that holidays have become a much bigger deal post-kids? I used to only give much thought to the big ones, mainly Thanksgiving and Christmas. For everything else it was more like, "It's Halloween/Valentine's Day/4th of July next week? Huh." But now every holiday is a chance to make a memory, teach my kids something, or create a tradition. One of my favorite ways to do so is through books. Which is why I love putting out holiday book lists for the littles. To that end - … [Read more...]
Classic (and Soon to be Classic) Christmas Reads
MPMK's resident children's literature expert Janssen is back today sharing 10 must-read Christmas books. I've just finished putting several of them on hold at our local library - thank you Janssen! Could anything be better than reading stories by Christmas tree lights? Throw in a mug of hot chocolate with some marshmallows and maybe a crackling fire, and you're looking at some of my favorite childhood Christmas memories. Of course, having the right books to read with your child is the most … [Read more...]
Top-Notch Halloween Stories
I love seasonal and holiday books, although I've discovered that you generally have to sort through a lot of poorly-written or cheesily-illustrated reads to find the gems. These are six that I consider very well-done against any scale, not just for Halloween. Earlier this week Steph suggested reading stories at night by candlelight as part of MPMK's 31 Ways to Start a Halloween Tradition. All of these picks would be excellent choices for doing so. … [Read more...]
Recreational Reading
If you have young children, summer might not be the time of year where you get in a lot of your own reading. But now, with the summer reading lists tucked away and a routine emerging as school starts up, perhaps you'll have a chance to get some reading of your own squeezed in. If you're looking for suggestions, here are eight books I'd put on my "Not-Summer Reading List:" … [Read more...]
Fall Project: Set Up a Book Nook
Interested in setting up a fabulous reading nook in your home? Last year around this time MPMK put together an entire book week. We covered topics like how to find great books, how to celebrate with books, even how to craft with books, and - my favorite - how to set up a book nook. I thought I'd repost our finds today for all of you who missed it the first time around. With fall and the school year just around the corner, now is the time to start plotting a spot for your kids' very own book … [Read more...]
New to Our Shelves: Less than Traditional Kid Books
A few months ago a publishing company contacted me and asked if I would take a look at a few of their newest books. As soon as I saw that one was written by Herve Tullet, I jumped at the chance. In case you're not familiar with Tullet, he's the creative genius behind the massively engaging, and uber popular, Press Here. (This interactive book is one of my kids favorites - if you don't have it, I'd highly recommend looking into it.) With Doodle Cook, Tullet once again serves up an … [Read more...]
POYEL: Creating an Audio Library for Quiet Time
I've talked a lot here about my general state of panic ever since C stopped napping regularly. As you guys know, I do a lot of my blogging when the kids are sleeping. That means that if C is no longer going to nap in the afternoon, then he needs to be doing something else that's independent of me (and if you've been reading this blog for any amount of time at all then you know that won't be sitting in front of the TV). My first attempt at tackling this conundrum came in the form of … [Read more...]
MPMK Reading Lists: The Early Reader World of Cynthia Rylant
I'm so pleased to be back today with another installment of "MPMK's Learning to Love Reading Book Lists" series. This time our talented guest poster Lisa has decided to focus on a specific author instead of age group. I love that she's picked a great one who writes for kids of all ages so you get them hooked early and then keep feeding the obsession as they grow. Also, many of these books are super inexpensive - around $3.99 each. Here's Lisa with the goods: Cynthia Rylant is a … [Read more...]
