Now that S is 5, I'm finding that the standard "half up with one barrette on each side" hairdo that I've been relying on isn't quite cutting it anymore. While she's not overly demanding now (an especially sparkly barrette or two clips instead of one is enough of an upgrade from the norm at the moment), I can tell the days when she'll be begging for braids and bow buns aren't far off. I figure I might as well get out ahead of it and start learning about such techniques now. Plus, … [Read more...]

Looking for a simple St. Patrick's Day dessert to make and share with your little? We're all about the kid friendly recipes here and we think you're going to love this one. I have a little corner of my pantry where I keep seasonal baking supplies. Every year I add something new and this year it's the Wilton 8 Cavity Silicone Shamrock Mold. It's a petite treat mold that makes seasonal treats a cinch. All I have to do is decide what to put inside the molds and just-like-that, I have something … [Read more...]
Homemade Valentine Treat: Chocolate Pomegranate Bonbons
In the spirit of 'sticking to our New Years commitments,' I whipped up a better for you treat for Valentine's Day. If you're eating clean, this is a treat you can indulge in but the kids will love it too. It's also super easy to make (hello two ingredients!) and it makes a pretty gift. There are several different ways of combining the two ingredients (semi-sweet chocolate and pomegranate seeds). I decided to make it into a bonbon shape by using a mini muffin tin. They are so tiny and … [Read more...]
DIY New Year’s Eve Party Hats
Spending New Year's Eve at home with the kids is as fun as you make it. You can mope around about the fact that you're not hitting the town, or you can pick some activities that the kids will really get into, celebrate it at 8pm and then toast each other when they're all tucked in bed. Last year we made our own balloon drop, drank some super yummy mocktails, ate sparkling Jello push pops, and even contemplated the 14 habits of happy families to fill out our FREE year-in-review/year-to-come … [Read more...]
Simple Holiday Baking: Peppermint Bombe Cake
Don't you love those recipes that look way more complicated than they actually are? You get all the credit for slaving away in the kitchen, when really you spent 20 minutes throwing it together and watched it turn into something amazing while you help the kids with their homework. I love this peppermint bombe cake because it looks so pretty on inside and out. You really can't mess up the frosting and when you sprinkle the outside with candy canes, it turns incredibly festive. Once … [Read more...]

Kids & Phones: A Guide for the Newbie Mom (from a Mom In the Trenches)
Our family is still slowly dipping our toes into the world of having school-aged kids. One of the topics that seems to keep coming up when chatting with my mom friends in the same position is that of the cell phone. And, of course, that one topic leads to a bevy of questions. When are kids ready for one? When might it be a good idea for communication/safety concerns? What rules and limits should be applied? How do we keep our kids, and those expensive phones safe? When questions like these … [Read more...]
Overnight Steel Cut Oats (and How to Get the Kids to Make Their Own Breakfast)
With that first snap of cool fall weather, all I want to do is cozy up with a warm bowl of oatmeal in the morning. Oatmeal is such a great breakfast option because it helps keep you full until lunch. I also love that oatmeal offers endless flavor combinations, from sweet to savory. My favorite oatmeal company, The Quaker Oats Company, makes the most delicious steel cut oats. Steel cut oats are simply chopped, while the regular rolled oats are steamed, rolled, steamed again and then … [Read more...]
