Two Books We’re Loving

April 23 by Steph (MPMK Founder)

As a certified bibliophile doing my damndest to make sure I raise 3 more book-lovers, I’m always thrilled to get review copies of books. That being said, I get so many offers to review books that I actually pass quite often; trying to save my work time (and shelf space) for the best of the best.

Today, I’ve got two awesome books geared towards kids that I can’t wait to share.

First up, is a really great new chapter book for the tween set; The New Girl Code.

If, like me, you’re always on the lookout for anything that opens up the world of STEM related professions to girls, then you’re probably assuming from the title that this one’s a home run. And you would be 100% correct in that assumption.

Written by Janneke Niessen, serial tech entrepreneur and UNICEF board member, The New Girl Code is part of a series of novels about the wonders of working in tech. It’s filled with role models young women can relate to and bring the possibilities of tech to life and my second grade daughter just loved it.

The New Girl Code had the perfect balance of intriguing story (will Charlie’s fashion app make it big?) without delving too deeply into teenage themes that might not be appropriate for tweens.

My daughter talked about the book a lot with me and I could see her really identifying parts of herself in the characters. Highly Recommend!

From the publisher…

The New Girl Code tells the story of 15 year–old Charlie who discovers her love for coding and most importantly, herself, as she enters her Sophomore year. Charlie lives in Brooklyn. She is a little awkward and a lot uncertain – about her future, friendships, lack of relationships.

This all changes when she discovers, through her love of fashion and friendship, an idea for an app, The Fashionist. As Charlie and her friends grow the app to unimaginable heights of success, they learn to adapt to their new CEO roles. On the rise, Charlie encounters a catfish, betrayals, school gossip, bullying and more. Will she boss up and be the next level?

P.S. All proceeds of the book will be used to distribute the book free to underprivileged children who would not have access otherwise.

The New Girl Code would make a fabulous addition to your child’s personal library this year!

And speaking of kid books that make great gifts. The other read we’re loving in our house right now is The Complete Cookbook for Young Chefs by America’s Test Kitchen.

I’m sure you’ve heard by now that one-on-one time with each of your kids is critical… Easier said than done, though, right?

As a parent of three young children, I can totally relate. That’s why I try to sneak in that time during our regular routine. And one of the easiest ways I’ve found to do this is by cooking dinner with one of my kids.

Again it’s my daughter that’s most into this and so far it’s been a big hit. I also really like how this time together gives me the opportunity to organically talk to her about healthy food and eating habits.

And, if you’re familiar with cookbooks at all, then you know that the America Test Kitchen collection has a stellar reputation for do-able, well-rounded recipes that routinely turn out great.

The Complete Cookbook for Kids is no exception. It’s gorgeous, really easy to follow, and- most importantly- full of straight-forward recipes my kids actually eat! If you’ve got (or if you want) a mini-chef in the family, this is another one I can’t recommend enough!
