Due to Blogger being down, I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to post today so I went the lazy route and planned on a 3-day weekend. Then, of course, Blogger came back to life and I’m feeling like I have to give you something for today. So how about a little reading-to-kids inspiration?
First is this amazing closet turned reading nook I spied over at Ohdeedoh this week by Thrifty Decor Chick. Seriously – I’m about to build a closet somewhere in my house just so I can convert it to a cozy reading spot. After all, kids love small secret spaces and I think this one will have them fighting each other (and me) over whose turn it is to curl up inside with a good book.
Second is this great post from The Imagination Tree about a conference she attended and a book she recommends on developing literacy in 2-6 year olds. You really should read the whole post for great info. on how to chose books for your kids. One idea that she highlights is that of choosing 5 titles from your home library and reading each of them every day for a week.
The thinking behind doing this is that it helps children learn the stories, and even memorize some of the words, so that they can help “read” and re-tell stories from a young age. We tried this with C over the past week (we cut it down to only 2 books because that’s our bedtime routine) and it’s working like gang busters. After the first few days he started reading the books to me and he was very excited to pick out 2 new books for the week on Sunday night.
I hope you’ll try this idea and let me know how it works out for you. Also, because of the aforementioned Blogger issues, I’m highlighting some of my earliest posts that you may have missed on my facebook page today. Be sure to check it out and have a great weekend!
