Stuff I’ve Been Meaning to Tell You About

January 16 by Steph (MPMK Founder)

Hi friends, are you all enjoying a day off today?  We got a good dump of snow this weekend – our first of the season and a lovely surprise.  So we’ll probably try to get in a little more sledding before the day is through.  Before I head off though, there are a few things I’ve been meaning to tell you about.

With it’s wild popularity, you’ve probably already seen the amazing post, Don’t Carpe Diem.  But I had to post about it just in case – it’s one of my favorite reads in a long, long time.
Also, I posted a while back about the awesome kid craft exhibits put on over at lilla a in which any child from around the globe can participate.  But I wanted to bring it up again because this month’s treasure boats edition is especially cool.  Not only will your child’s art be featured online, it will also be included in the next issue of the new magazine for children, Big Kids Magazine.  How special would that be to hang up in your child’s room?  Click here for all the details.

The Time Timer App (spotted by me at, what is now, Apartment Therapy’s new Family channel) is something every parent of young ones needs at their fingertips.  As they put it, this thing is a life-saver in that it visually represents the answer to that age-old question, “how much longer?”.

Finally,  I can’t say enough good things about the post Want to Give Your Kids an Advantage? Build Executive Functions from Not Just Cute. Every since reading about the correlation between executive function and success in Nurture Shock, I’ve been on the look out for some concrete examples of how to work on those skills.  Leave it my girl Amanda to hook me up with a whole list of games and activities!

P.S. Speaking of Nurture Shock, there’s a great chapter in there: Why White Parents Don’t Talk About Race – a topic that seems particularly salient today.  If you haven’t read the book, buy it – it’s only $5.40 a copy right now!  Also, see here for a nice interview with the authors on talking to kids about race.
