Do you guys remember the play workbench roundup I did a while back? After all that research we ended up deciding we just didn’t have the space. Plus, one of C’s favorite games lately is to “fix” one of his riding toys with a series of pretend tools that I hand to him one by one (Now I need a hammer Mommy, OK now I need a screwdriver Mommy) and I didn’t want to kill all that imagination with actual tools.
Every once in a while, though, C just really wants to pound on something. So I asked my hubby to whip up a small toy for doing just that. I told him about some examples I’ve seen around the web using foam and nails or golf tees and this is what he came up with.
It’s just two pieces of packing Styrofoam we had lying around the garage sandwiched together and bordered with painters tape. The double layer makes it nice and thick for hammering in those tees and the tape keeps it from crumbling around the sides.
C got the idea immediately – no instructions required. He picked up the tees and started hammering away. (We happened to have this play hammer lying around but you could use a wooden mallet, a toy hammer

When he was done he pulled them out…
…flipped the whole thing over and started again. The grid pattern on the back was unintentional but it provides a nice guide for where to put each tee and we may eventually use it to make various shapes.
We’ve had this toy for a few days now and it’s a bonafide hit. Plus it was totally free – can’t beat that!
