{Play Idea} A Simple Technique to Keep Kids Coloring Longer

August 4 by Steph (MPMK Founder)

A super easy tip for extending coloring time - filing this one in my Mommy toolbox!

Coloring is at the very top of my super-simple, go-to activities for keeping the kids happy and occupied. It’s a total classic, of course, and encourages all kinds of open-ended creativity.

So when my friends Holly and Rachel of Kids Activity Blog sent me their new book, I knew it was going to be well used in our house as soon as I saw this project.

Such a fun and easy technique for extending coloring time!

This is such a simple way to extend a basic coloring session. Can you guess what we’re using to make our crayon creations pop?

A super easy tip for extending coloring time - filing this one in my Mommy toolbox!

It’s nothing more than dollar aisle clear hair gel and a little food coloring!

Simply mix about 4 Tbsp. of the hair gel with 10 to 15 drops of your favorite food coloring color. Then have your child use a small cut up sponge to apply a thin layer over the top of their crayon drawings and watch the colors pop.

My kiddos were totally captivated by this brilliantly simple activity and we spent an ENTIRE MORNING playing with the new technique.

Full of mom-friendly easy set-up activities to keep the kids busy and happy.

101 Kids Activities that are the Bestest, Funnest Ever! is full of genius little ideas like this one. Just like on their blog, Holly and Rachel have focused on no-fuss activities that are easy for moms to set up quickly and then let the kids at them.

If you’re looking for ideas to help you get a little time to do some laundry, cook dinner (or to really go crazy and sit with your kids and enjoy a cup of tea or latte while they create), this is it!

Thanks to Rachel and Holly for allowing me to review their wonderful new book – I owe you a latte ladies!
