I don’t know about you, but my baubles always end up all over the place. Probably because I am constantly trying to keep up with a toddler and an 8 month-old. But even on my dresser, where most of my jewelry accumulates, I have no place to collect it all the stray pieces.
Enter: the Trinket Dish. I saw something similar at Anthropologie and thought it would make the perfect Mother’s Day gift (I know I’d want one). Plus, it’s so easy to make.
First I scoured our local dollar store for a few plastic animals and melamine plates. Then it was off to the hardware store to pick up some spray paint. You’ll need primer, white, and gold.
I set both the animals and plates on my project board for primer and a solid coat of high gloss white.
Once the plates were dry, I flipped them over and gave them a good coat of gold paint on the back. I made sure to cover the rims of the plate, in order to add a pretty little detail on the finished product.
With the plates drying, it was the perfect time to hand paint the animals. I used Martha Stewart craft paint, in metallic gold (and a paint brush that has seen A LOT of love).
Now THIS is is the fun part. You can be as detailed or simple as you like. I chose to paint little details on both the lion and the rhinoceros. As for the Dinosaur, I went for a white-washed look (just do one coat of gold craft paint, then blot with a wet paper towel until you are satisfied with the look).
Once both the animals and plates are dry, simply place a few dots of hot glue on the animals’ feet, attach them to the plates, and you’re done!

I love them all so much, I couldn’t decide which one to keep! Isaiah finally helped me decide on the rhino. But I think it’s just because he likes how I store my ring…
