Magnetic Fabric Letters / Magnetic Wall Giraffe Take 2

February 3 by Steph (MPMK Founder)

If you’ve been here before then you know all about the magnetic wall giraffe, the project that started it all, the impetus of this very blog.  Well I have a confession to make…”Backhoe” the giraffe is flawed, and not just because his name is Backhoe (in an interesting intersection of two of C’s favorite things, construction vehicles and animals, he recently named all the painted animals in his room “Backhoe” – but I digress).  Sadly, Backhoe’s super cheap affordable wooden alphabet letters have not held up as well as I’d hoped and we’ve lost a few by playing rough.  I guess you get what you pay for.

In an effort to redeem myself, and Backhoe the giraffe, I’ve been plotting the debut of some magnetic fabric letters.  A quick search of my blog files revealed no less than 3 relevant tutorials, each helpful in their own way, plus the etsy option pictured above (in case you don’t happen to have tons of spare time to make fabric letters).  Read on for the tutorials plus a great freebie.

Here is the quick and dirty DIY that reminded me I wanted to do this.  Found at The Daily B and first spotted by me on Ohdeedoh, this is probably all the info. and inspiration you’ll need to get the job done.

On the other end of the spectrum is this exquisite tutorial from Chez Beeper Bebe (remember her library tote?) complete with templates for each letter.  Can we all just take a moment and marvel at the detail of the instructions and diagrams here?  I wish every task in life came with directions from Chez Beeper Bebe.

Lastly in the DIY department is this handy no-sew option from the purl bee, which also comes with letter templates.  Which fabric alphabet floats your boat?  I’m partial to DIY option #2, due to my aforementioned love of the PDF tutorial, my recent bad luck with magnet stickers, and my determination to use my sewing machine more in 2011.  Stay tuned for my finished product and drop me a line if you decide to attempt this yourself.
And if all this fabric letter goodness has you kicking yourself for not having a magnetic wall in your space – here’s a free printable alphabet poster from MyPoppet (spotted at Li’l Magaloo).  It’s not quite the real thing but it is a great pop of beautiful colors for your wall.
