One of the toughest challenges I face as a mom is figuring out ways to let my kids play and get dirty, while still making them presentable to be out in public and not spending a fortune.
Because I’m all for letting kids be kids but, honestly, who wants to keep spending money on kids’ clothes when you know they could soon meet their demise.
So when Swap.com asked me to participate in their Earth day campaign. I just couldn’t resist. Did you know that the average American throws away 85% of their clothes each year? That’s 65 lbs. of textiles per person heading to landfills and a total of 14.3 million tons of textile waste in landfills each and every year.
Saving the earth and saving myself some cash– what’s not to love?
I said yes, they sent me a code, and a few days later a very large box of wonderfulness was waiting on my doorstep.
If you’re not familiar with Swap.com, it’s basically an online consignment store. Which is EXACTLY what I need in my life!
In theory, I absolutely love the idea of purging my house of all my kids’ old clothes while keeping them out of a landfill and earning store cash to build new wardrobes… In practice what has always happened at brick and mortar consignment stores is as follows:
Step 1: I spend a good chunk of time online figuring out my local consignment store’s drop-off hours and (frankly, often confusing) rules and then wait a few weeks until the heavens align and my schedule works to bring my stuff in.
Step 2: I find out I’ve misunderstood some of their rules and take 20% – 30% of my stuff back home with me.
Step 3: I completely forget to go check on my items, or my credit, for the next 6 months.
There’s gotta be a better way right? There is.
At Swap.com you can order a shipping label to send your items to be listed for sale. They will sort, photograph, list and market your items on your behalf so that you can earn money as quickly as possible.
Best of all, if your items have not sold after 45 days, they will offer to buy them. An average customer box earns $150 in sales proceeds.
But enough talk- you guys want to see how we did, right?
We got 16 dresses and 1 skirt for $98.60 total! (Shipping is free on your first order of over $50).
Check out this short video of my daughter gleefully unpacking her loot.
In case you can’t tell by the speed of the video, the box was a huge hit.
My daughter was thrilled and, I have to say, I was pretty psyched to score 17 items at an average cost of $5.80 each.
Here are a couple of my favorite finds. I know my frilly tomboy will be wearing this adorable jean skirt with capri leggings all spring and summer and it was only $2.80!
Also, how lovely is this Abercromie dress? I totally want one to match.
Our box was packed with brands we know and love and I really couldn’t have been happier.
I do have to admit one thing, though. Part of the reason I was able to score such great deals was because I had a discount code. But don’t worry, I’m hooking you up with one too.
If you would like to check out Swap.com and save some cash while getting your kids (or yourself – they also carry adult clothes) ready for warmer weather, be sure to take advantage of this…
