Did you know that Thursday is International Talk Like a Pirate Day? Time to straighten those eye-patches and polish your hooks and go on a hunt for buried gold. And possibly sneak a book aboard your pirate ship. Here’s eight (four picture books and four juvenile novels) you might want to make room for in your treasure chest.
Picture Books:
- Pirate Nap: A Book of Colors by Danna Smith and Valeria Petrone. This book is a favorite in our house, with two little boys making up pirate adventures using supplies from around their house.
- Pirates Don’t Change Diapers by Melinda Long and David Shannon. What could possibly scare a ferocious pirate? A screaming baby, that’s what. This is an ideal read aloud book.
- Dirty Joe, the Pirate: A True Story by Bill Harley and Jack E. Davis. Not all pirates search for gold treasure. Dirty Joe and his pirate crew are off to capture the ultimate prize – dirty socks! But another pirate is determined to get there first.
- Charlotte Jane Battles Bedtime by Myra Wolfe and Maria Monescillo. Charlotte Jane and her teddy bear are ready for any pirate adventure. There’s certainly no space in their busy schedule for bedtime.
Chapter Books:
- Peter and the Star Catchers by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. You may think you know the story of Peter Pan, but this book explores Peter’s life before he became the most famous boy who wouldn’t grow up and when he was just a hungry orphan who ends up aboard the ship the Never Land which carries some mysterious cargo. Funny, fast-paced, and exciting, I loved every page of this book.
- The Not-So-Jolly Roger by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith. This book is part of Scieszka’s great Time Warp Trio series and they are just as funny as you’d expect from Scieszka – great for reluctant readers or those just starting to dive into chapter books.
- The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi. I first read this Newbery Honor book when I was eleven or twelve and it’s remained one of my fall-time favorites. After finishing the year at school in England, Charlottle Doyle (age 13) finds herself the lone passenger on the voyage back to her family in Rhode Island. Almost the moment she steps on board, she is caught up on the mutiny taking place on the ship and finds herself on trial for murder.
- Magic Marks the Spot by by Caroline Carlson and Dave Phillips. This is the first book in a new trilogy (it just came out last week) about a girl who dreams of being being a pirate, but The Very Nearly Honorable League of Pirates doesn’t admit girls. As you can imagine, Hilary is NOT one to take no for an answer.
