{Book Nook} 10 Books Kids Will Love if They Loved Frozen

August 19 by Janssen

Such a smart idea to use your kid's latest obsession to help fuel a love of reading. Love that this list is from a children's librarian and has age recommendations.

I know by now you are likely pretty sick of all things Ana, Elsa and Olaf. But here’s a parenting trick I learned a while back – you can use whatever your child is currently obsessing about to help foster a love of reading.

It’s all about pointing out the similarities between the story they already love and some new stories worth exploring. The key, of course, is to know where to look.

So today our resident children’s librarian, Janssen, is sharing 10 books every Frozen fan is sure to connect with.

Are your kids obsessed with Frozen?

Mine too.

We listen to the music, my girls pretend they are Elsa and Ana, and if it were up to my oldest, we’d watch it for family movie night every single week (Dad put a quick kibosh to that idea).

If you need a break from the movie too, here are ten books that will appeal to Elsa and Ana’s biggest fans.

  1. A Baby Sister for Frances by Russell Hoban and Lillian Hoban. Sometimes having a younger sister can be tricky. But running away isn’t the answer as Frances learns in this sweet book. Ages 4-8.
  2. Snowmen All Year by Caralyn Buehner and Mark Buehner. If Olaf is your child’s favorite part of Frozen, they’ll love this book about magic snowmen that don’t melt and get to enjoy all the seasons of the year. For 3-8 year olds.
  3. Brave Irene by William Steig. When a dress must be delivered for the ball that night, Irene volunteers to brave the storm to get the dress to the duchess. Brave girls, snowstorms, and ball gowns, this book is perfect for Frozen lovers between 4 and 8.
  4. Penny and Her Song by Kevin Henkes. Penny wants to express herself through song, but her parents are too worried about the younger children being disturbed. (Sound like another set of siblings you’ve heard of?) This easy reader book is perfect for 3-5 year olds as a read-aloud or 5-8 year olds as an independent book.
  5. The Lemon Sisters by Andrea Cheng and Tatiana Mai-Wyss. Snow is always better with sisters. Elsa and Ana know it and so do the Lemon sisters. Ages 4-8.
  6. Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine. This spin on the Cinderella story tells Ella’s story with her magic curse she can’t control. This is one of my all-time favorite books.  Ages 10-14.
  7. One Cool Friend by Toni Buzzeo and David Small. What do you do when you bring home a penguin? This funny story about dealing with a pet who needs a certain climate might be just the ticket for the Olaf-lovers in your life. Ages 4-8.
  8. The First Snow by David Christiana.  Mother Nature only liked warm weather. Until she discovered for herself how delightful a snowy day can be. Ages 4-8.
  9. Journey by Aaron Becker. If you’ve dreamed of entering a magic world, turn off Frozen and try this wordless picture book instead. It’s perfect! Ages 3-8.
  10. The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale. Like the sisters in Frozen, Ani takes it upon herself to save her kingdom and herself. Ages 10-16.
