Every year, just before school starts, I buy my kids a new lunch box and new ice packs to go with it. The ice packs tend to get dirty, broken or lost before the end of the year. But, in order for my kids to eat their homemade lunch, the veggies need to be crisp, the sandwich cool and the yogurt ice cold.
I recently discovered my favorite new trick for packing lunches…freezing the yogurt.
Not only does this act as an ice pack for the lunch, but by the time noon rolls around the yogurt has defrosted into a perfectly cold treat. My favorite brand for freezing is Stonyfield YoKids because their pouches are shaped just like an ice pack. (Of course, the yogurt squeezers and smoothies work well frozen too!)
And here’s something really great, Stonyfield recently announced a sugar reduction across its yogurt products. In fact, Stonyfield YoKids yogurt features between 25% to 40% less sugar than the leading kids’ yogurt.
If you’ve ever looked at yogurt, you know most brands have an incredibly high amount of added sugar so this is huge. I also love that YoKids is all organic, which means they don’t use any toxic persistent pesticides, artificial hormones, antibiotics or GMOs. Organic Certification matters because just calling something natural isn’t a guarantee. You can learn more here.
Finding something my kids love that I deem good for their health is a win-win. I not only use the yogurts in their lunch, I also use them as an after school or after dinner treat.
One of our family’s favorites is a berry yogurt parfait. We like the blueberry yogurt mixed with granola and fresh blueberries.
Hint: Presentation is everything! I use my fancy glasses to layer yogurt, then granola, then blueberries to the top. You could also try the strawberry yogurt to make strawberry parfaits.
I hope you’ll try a couple of these ideas soon because, while the shelves may be filled with a seemingly endless variety of kids yogurt, your kids are your #1 priority, and they deserve the #1 organic kids yogurt!
