I don’t know about you, but I don’t cook much in the summertime. Mostly we grill, which I leave to my hubby, and munch on lots of fresh fruit, cold salads, and corn on the cob.
But autumn is a different story, it’s a time when I look to get back into the kitchen and to start focusing on making heartier soups, stews, and casseroles. In fact, I often cook these thing two batches at a time – one to eat and one to freeze.
If you’re looking to work your way back to the kitchen too, we’ve got a treat for you today – Kristin’s top ten favorite items for beating, blending, and baking like a pro. Because sometimes it takes the enticement of a shiny new toy to get us all back into cooking mode.
This list is by no means exhaustive, but here are my current 10 favorite things in the kitchen. They range from $6 to over $300… so there’s something for everyone!
On the less expensive end, I LOVE the poach pods from Crate and Barrel. I’m a recent convert to poached eggs and now I make them a few times a week.
The hand juicer is also a huge time saver (I have a lemon tree, so I use this a lot!). There is no substitute for the micro-plane zester. I use it for parmesan and citrus regularly and I’ve talked before about kitchen shears and how I also use them for just about everything.
Oh and silicon spatulas…they get every bit of batter out of the bowl. The salt cellar is also a recent favorite. I use koscher salt in cooking, so it’s nice to have by the stove top for a little pinch here and there.
In the middle, we have the mini food processor. I also have the big one, but I seem to use this one a lot more for little jobs and it comes in so many bright and happy colors.
I never knew I needed an immersion blender until my mother in law gave me one for Christmas. I make a lot of soup and it’s so easy to thicken the soup by blending it a little in the pot.
The griddle pan goes over your stove top and makes grilling possible in cold-weather months. The other side is flat, so you can make lots of pancakes in a flash too. (Perfect for those days when you just can’t think of what to make – breakfast for dinner to the rescue.)
And we end with the kitchen aid mixer. This is the color I have and I love it. I don’t think I’ll ever grow tired of gunmetal grey. And this thing is a work horse. It’s worth every. single. penny.
