Hi MPMK friends! I’m SO excited that Stephanie asked me to guest post for her while she’s away. This is such a beautiful space and I love reading MPMK daily!
I blog over at Small Fry, which is a children’s lifestyle blog… come and visit us some time.
As a busy mom of two boys, I find it really difficult to come up with new ways to get our family to eat different foods. We are dairy free in our household due to allergies so that adds to the challenge.
One very simple way I have found to get my kids to try new foods is to make them fun, and it doesn’t have to be hard.
This is how I discovered what I like to call “kid sushi.” By rolling up their sandwiches in to fun little bite sized pieces I noticed my kids ate WAY more and just had a lot of fun doing it.
Also my kids go nuts over sections on their plate, so a bento box sent them over the edge. They’re always stoked to see who can eat the “fruit section” or “sandwich section” first.
Here’s how you’ll make Kid Sushi at home:
Cut off the crust of a bread of your choosing (we all know they don’t like it anyway) and lay it flat on a cutting board. Using a cutting board, or pan, lay it over the top and gently press down. This will slightly flatten the bread but also tighten the fibers so it holds together more easily.
Spread on mayo, almond butter, or guacamole, whatever spread your child likes best. Next add thinly sliced veggies, fruit, turkey, ham, peanut butter, honey… the world is your oyster with this.
Roll up the bread tight and cut it in to thirds. I like to put whatever spread I used at the end of the bread to seal the roll together tighter.
And that’s it. There’s really no way to do this wrong and I promise your kids will see the tired old sandwich in a new light!
