Last week I promoted the idea of getting that handmade Halloween costume look (without the work) by sharing my favorite Etsy finds. This week I’ve got a round up for those of you who want to put in some man hours and do the homemade thing for real. From embellishing store-bought clothes to a super useful step-by-step video class, these sources will provide all the help you need regardless of your skills with a Singer (that’s a type of sewing machine and if you didn’t know that, rest assured that even you can do this!). Click through for all the goods.
I myself was torn between the Etsy route and the DIY route this year so I decided to go with both. Step one was buying a dinosaur hoodie on Etsy and (yet-to-be-completed) step two is whipping up a matching dinosaur tail using this tutorial.
I went this direction instead of just buying a dinosaur costume like this one because I wanted to be able to add the pieces to C’s dress-up kit once Halloween is over. I can definitely picture him slipping on the hoodie or tail for playtime… but getting into an entire costume? Not so much.
This baby octopus from 2009 is probably my all-time-favorite DIY costume. Can you believe all it took to make this guy was a few pair of baby tights, buttons, and some cotton balls? Really, that’s it – even the hat is made of tights! I try not to say this too much because I think it’s way overused on the web but in this case it definitely applies – genius!

Aren’t those ribbon wings sweet? They’re exactly the type of thing I’d love to make for S but really have no idea where to even start. Luckily, Anne of the lovely flax and twine has a new online course called The Costume Box which includes detailed, downloadable instructions and pattern templates for creating more than 50 different costumes. The course is currently discounted from $29.99 to $14.99. Anne was kind enough to send me a free link for review purposes and, although I won’t be using it for Halloween, I plan to make C a cape to add to the aforementioned dress-up kit in the next week or so.

This is the only find that isn’t a DIY. These felt masks are for those of you that have the sewing part of costume making covered but still need a bit of help in the inspiration department.

Since starting MPMK, I’ve been fortunate to connect with some amazingly creative bloggers. This super-clever and super-cute viking costume was put together by my new pal Cheri over at I Am Momma Hear Me Roar. Why “super-clever”? It’s made of toilet seat covers!
Finally, the entire bottom row of costumes in the top photo were made by Lisa Storms. Her philosophy of starting with a pre-made base, like a hoodie, is the answer to every busy parent’s prayers.
